COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT

At Broulee Psychology, we provide comprehensive cognitive assessments to better understand how a person thinks, learns, processes information, and solves problems. Cognitive assessments (often referred to as IQ testing) provide valuable insight into intellectual strengths, areas of challenge, and overall learning profile.

Whether you are seeking clarity about your child’s development, exploring giftedness, or needing information to guide educational planning, our assessments are thorough, supportive, and tailored to your needs.

What is a cognitive assessment?

A cognitive assessment evaluates a range of thinking skills, including:

  • Verbal comprehension

  • Visual-spatial reasoning

  • Fluid reasoning and problem solving

  • Working memory

  • Processing speed

These results provide a detailed understanding of how an individual learns and processes information.

Cognitive assessments can be helpful for children, adolescents, and adults.

Why Consider a Cognitive Assessment?

Families and individuals may seek a cognitive assessment to:

  • Understand learning strengths and weaknesses

  • Investigate academic underperformance

  • Explore concerns about intellectual development

  • Assess for giftedness

  • Support school planning or adjustments

  • Clarify discrepancies between ability and achievement

  • Inform further assessment (e.g., ADHD, Autism, or learning disorders)

A cognitive assessment can provide clarity and direction when there are questions about learning, development, or educational progress.

What to Expect?

The assessment process typically includes:

  1. Initial consultation – to gather background information and clarify concerns

  2. Assessment sessions – structured tasks completed one-on-one with a psychologist

  3. Scoring and interpretation

  4. Comprehensive written report

  5. Feedback session – to explain results and discuss recommendations

We ensure that the process is supportive, respectful, and tailored to the individual’s age and needs.

What You Will Receive

Following assessment, you will receive:

  • A detailed written report

  • Explanation of cognitive strengths and challenges

  • Clear summary of overall intellectual functioning

  • Practical recommendations for home, school, or workplace

  • Guidance regarding any next steps

Our goal is to provide not just scores, but meaningful understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a cognitive assessment and a learning assessment?

A cognitive assessment measures thinking and reasoning abilities (IQ). A learning assessment includes both cognitive testing and academic achievement testing (reading, writing, maths) to determine whether a specific learning disorder is present.

At what age can cognitive testing be completed?

Cognitive assessments are generally appropriate from early primary school age through adulthood. We will discuss suitability based on developmental level.

Will my child receive an IQ score?

Yes. Cognitive assessments typically provide an overall IQ score as well as index scores reflecting different areas of cognitive functioning. We explain these results carefully to ensure they are understood in context.

Can cognitive testing identify giftedness?

Yes. Cognitive assessment can help identify high intellectual ability and may support applications for extension programs or gifted education pathways.

Does this assessment diagnose ADHD or Autism?

A cognitive assessment alone does not diagnose ADHD or Autism. However, results may indicate whether further neurodevelopmental assessment would be helpful.

How long does the process take?

Assessment sessions are typically completed over one or two appointments, depending on age and complexity. The full process includes scoring, report writing, and a feedback session.

Will schools accept the report?

Yes. Our reports are suitable for schools and can assist with educational planning, adjustment requests, and support applications.

HOW MUCH DOES A COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT COST?

The cost for a cognitive assessment is dependent upon the reason for referral and whether any further follow up is required.  Because the assessment requires at least 3 assessment sessions, time for scoring and reviewing questionnaires and additional time to write up the personalised report, the cost for this assessment ranges from $1500 - $2000.
