LEARNING / EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT
Everyone learns at a different rate but some individuals struggle to learn, particularly in key academic areas, such as literacy and numeracy. This can be an issue for young people and adults and can cause concerns with schooling and self-confidence.
At Broulee Psychology, we provide comprehensive learning assessments to help understand academic strengths and challenges. If you or your child is struggling with reading, writing, spelling, maths, or overall learning progress, a thorough assessment can provide clarity, direction, and practical recommendations. This can also provide diagnostic clarity around specific learning disorders, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.
Our goal is to identify how your child learns best and to provide meaningful guidance for home and school support.

What is a learning assessment?
A learning assessment is a detailed evaluation of a child or adolescent’s cognitive abilities and academic skills. It helps determine whether learning difficulties are present and whether these are consistent with specific learning disorders such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.
Assessments typically include:
-
Cognitive (IQ) testing
-
Academic achievement testing (reading, writing, spelling, maths)
-
Assessment of processing skills (e.g., working memory, processing speed)
-
Behavioural and developmental history
-
Parent and teacher questionnaires (where appropriate)
Why Consider a Learning Assessment?
A learning assessment can:
-
Provide clarity about your child’s learning profile
-
Identify specific learning disorders
-
Support access to school-based adjustments
-
Inform Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
-
Guide evidence-based intervention
-
Strengthen your child’s confidence and self-understanding
Early identification can make a significant difference in academic progress and emotional wellbeing.
What You Will Receive
Following the assessment, you will receive:
-
A comprehensive written report
-
Clear explanation of findings
-
Diagnostic clarification (where applicable)
-
Individualised recommendations for home and school
-
Guidance regarding appropriate interventions
We take time to ensure families fully understand the results and next steps.
A Collaborative Approach
We work collaboratively with parents, schools, and other professionals to ensure recommendations are practical and achievable. Our focus is not only on identifying challenges but also on recognising strengths and building confidence.
HOW MUCH DOES A LEARNING DIFFICULTIES ASSESSMENT COST?
Learning assessments are quoted on an individualised basis depending upon the number of sessions required and the complexity of the situation. Assessments generally involve 3-4 sessions as well as clinician time outside of the session to score questionnaires and assessment tools and write up the assessment report. This generally involves 10-15 hours total time from the psychologist providing assessment. The cost of assessment ranges from $2500 - $3000 for this reason. This cost can be broken up into payments per sessions or paid in full following the initial session.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my child be assessed?
Learning assessments are typically appropriate from around age 6–7 years, once formal literacy and numeracy instruction has begun. However, we can discuss individual circumstances to determine readiness.
How long does the assessment process take?
The full process generally includes:
-
An initial parent interview
-
1–2 assessment sessions with your child
-
Scoring and analysis
-
A detailed feedback session
Will my child receive a diagnosis?
If assessment findings meet diagnostic criteria under the DSM-5-TR for a Specific Learning Disorder (reading or mathematics), this will be clearly outlined in the report. If criteria are not met, we will still provide detailed recommendations to support learning.
What is the difference between dyslexia and a reading delay?
Dyslexia (Specific Learning Disorder with impairment in reading) reflects persistent and significant difficulties in reading that are not explained by intellectual ability, opportunity, or effort. A reading delay may improve with standard classroom support, whereas dyslexia typically requires targeted, structured intervention.
Will the school accept the report?
Yes. Our comprehensive reports are suitable for schools and can support:
-
Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
-
Classroom accommodations
-
Applications for additional support
-
Consideration for exam adjustments (where appropriate)
We encourage families to share reports with their child’s school to promote collaborative support.
Does this assessment test for ADHD or Autism?
A learning assessment focuses specifically on cognitive and academic functioning. If concerns regarding ADHD or Autism are present, we can discuss whether a broader neurodevelopmental assessment may be appropriate.
What happens after the assessment?
You will receive:
-
A comprehensive written report
-
Clear explanation of results
-
Diagnostic clarification (if applicable)
-
Practical, individualised recommendations
We ensure you leave the feedback session with a clear plan for next steps.
